Both were kept as companions and both were referred to as 'lion dogs'. Both the maltese and the shih tzu prone to slipped kneecaps, or luxating patellas. Yesterday night, i went to sleep and his fur was all white with a large caramel spot on his back (that's his normal fur) and when i woke up this morning he had developed a black patch of fur. The maltese shih tzu is an excellent companion because he adapts easily to apartment living and he is great for the elderly.
